Following the Rules?

I’m a first-born, so a natural rule follower by nature.

I floss my teeth daily.  I drive 10 and 2.  My toddlers stay rear facing until the proper weight.  I change the batteries out on the smoke alarms once a year.  I use a meat thermometer nearly daily.  I wash the filters on my vacuum cleaner because the owner’s manual says to!  (And, yes, I read the owner’s manual for my vacuum cleaner…)

I have a confession to make that grinds against the “following the rules” grain: I don’t buy organic, I don’t go to a chiropractor, I don’t exercise daily, I don’t recycle and I use a microwave.  I know, I KNOW! Continue reading Following the Rules?

Chicken Fried Rice (or Dumplings)

I blogged this recipe a year ago, so if you’ve followed for a while, this will be de ja vu.  I blog it again to tell you of a variation that has been a hit with my fam.  Recently, we tried this idea with Skinner Dumpling noodles subbed in for the rice.  It was tasty!  I appreciated the clean up of it much more than the rice–it is tidier when serving children.  (Rice just gets everywhere!) As I experimented with this recipe today, I frequently bent my knees, threw my head back and closed my eyes.

Mr. Hamburger Helper Marries a Closet Foodie: A Lesson on Marriage

When my husband’s parents divorced when he was fourteen, his Dad said, “You can have everything, I just want our son.”

So the father and son became inseparable and lived in a tiny, sparsely furnished apartment and my husband began bachelorhood at fourteen.  Froot Loops, Pizza, Mountain Dew and Skoal were the breaking bread of this father-son loyalty and Hamburger Helper and Ramen somehow became my husband’s favorite foods.  “Fending for oneself” was a necessity of survival.
